Free MTG Pack Opening Simulator
PackSim is a free MTG pack simulator that lets you open Magic: The Gathering booster packs online. Crack Collector Boosters, Play Boosters, and Draft Boosters across 31+ sets with accurate pull rates and real market prices. No account needed — just pick a set and start opening.
How the Pack Opener Works
Select a set and booster type, then hit Open Pack. Cards reveal one by one with a flip animation, just like cracking a real booster. Each card shows its current market price from Scryfall, and every slot follows official Wizards of the Coast distribution odds. Your session tracks total pack value and cards opened so you can compare pulls across sets.
Collector Booster Simulator
Collector Boosters are packed with premium cards and special treatments. Our simulator includes every foil variant: textured foils, galaxy foils, surge foils, fracture foils, raised foils, etched foils, and more. Each Collector Booster contains 15 cards with a mix of guaranteed foils and non-foil booster fun variants. Want to see what a $30+ pack could contain before buying? Open a few here first.
Play Booster Simulator
Play Boosters replaced both Draft Boosters and Set Boosters starting with Murders at Karlov Manor. Each 14-card Play Booster includes a wildcard slot where any rarity can appear — commons, uncommons, rares, or mythic rares. Great for practicing sealed pool evaluation, checking pull rates for a new set, or just enjoying the thrill of cracking packs without the cost.
Draft Booster Simulator
For older sets released before the Play Booster transition, PackSim supports Draft Boosters with their classic 15-card structure: 10 commons, 3 uncommons, 1 rare or mythic rare, and 1 basic land. Sets like Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate, Dominaria Remastered, and The Brothers' War use this format.
MTG Booster Types Explained
Magic: The Gathering offers several booster pack types, each with a different card mix and price point:
- Collector Boosters — 15 cards loaded with foils, extended art, borderless, and showcase treatments. The most expensive booster type, designed for collectors chasing premium versions of cards.
- Play Boosters — 14 cards meant for both limited play and casual opening. Replaced Draft and Set Boosters in 2024. Contains a wildcard slot and 1 guaranteed foil.
- Draft Boosters — The classic 15-card booster used for drafting. Available for sets released before 2024. Simple distribution with a reliable rare/mythic slot.
Foil Treatments in MTG
Modern MTG Collector Boosters feature a growing variety of foil types beyond the standard rainbow foil. PackSim simulates them all:
- Textured Foil — A raised texture across the card art, usually reserved for mythic rares and chase cards. Among the rarest pulls in a Collector Booster.
- Galaxy Foil — Sparkle-like foil pattern found in Universes Beyond sets like Doctor Who and Fallout.
- Surge Foil — Ripple-like foil effect. Common in Commander and supplemental products.
- Fracture Foil — Shattered glass pattern unique to Duskmourn: House of Horror Collector Boosters.
- Halo Foil — Ring-like foil pattern introduced in March of the Machine.
- Neon Ink Foil — Vivid neon highlights from Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty, available in multiple colors.
- Etched Foil — Metallic finish on the frame only, leaving the art non-foil. Found in Modern Horizons and Commander sets.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is an MTG pack simulator?
An MTG pack simulator (also called a pack opener or booster simulator) lets you open Magic: The Gathering booster packs online for free. You get realistic card reveals with the same pull rates as real packs — without spending any money. It's useful for checking what a set's Collector Booster or Play Booster contains before buying.
Are the pull rates accurate?
Yes. PackSim uses the official Wizards of the Coast card distributions for each booster type. Every slot follows weighted odds that match real boosters, including wildcard slots, foil distribution, and special chase card rates.
Are the card prices real?
Card prices are pulled live from Scryfall's market data in real time. You'll see the current value of every card you open, making it easy to estimate what a real pack might be worth.
What's inside a Collector Booster?
A typical Collector Booster contains 15 cards with a mix of foil and non-foil cards in premium treatments: extended art, borderless, showcase, and special foil types like textured or galaxy foil. The exact contents vary by set — select any set in the simulator and the pack description will show the full slot breakdown.
What's the difference between Play Boosters and Draft Boosters?
Play Boosters (14 cards) replaced Draft Boosters (15 cards) starting in 2024 with Murders at Karlov Manor. Play Boosters combine elements of the old Draft and Set Boosters: they work for limited play but also include a wildcard slot and a guaranteed foil card. Sets released before 2024 still use the Draft Booster format in PackSim.
Can I simulate opening a full booster box?
Not yet as a single action, but you can open packs one at a time. PackSim tracks your session stats — total packs opened, cards seen, and cumulative value — so you can simulate the experience of cracking a full box across multiple openings.
How many rares can you pull from a Collector Booster?
Most Collector Boosters guarantee at least 3-5 rares or mythic rares, depending on the set. Some slots have a chance to upgrade to mythic, so the actual rare/mythic count varies per pack. The simulator uses the exact same odds as physical packs.
Is PackSim free?
Completely free. No account, no login, no limits on how many packs you open. Card data loads directly from Scryfall's public API.
